Wow, yesterday’s storms that went through Eastern Iowa were something else! We sure did get some hail at our office!
Today we are receiving telephone calls from customers asking us to come and assess their roofs for storm damage.
“Can you tell me, does my roof have hail storm damage?” Of course, that is what we do.
Action Steps for Hail Damage:
Here are a few tips for you if you think you may have storm damage caused by hail or wind:
- Call a professional roofing contractor. The contractor will get on the roof and do a walk with inspection. It is our practice to take photos and videos and email them so you can refer to them when talking over the damage with your insurance agent.
- Determine if you should file an insurance claim. After receiving the advice of your roofing professional, contact your homeowner’s insurance company. They may send an adjuster to do a follow up inspection, and your roofing contractor should be willing to meet with them at the same time. Some homeowners may look at the pictures and decide they do not want to file a claim and may choose not to do repairs or carry the expense themselves.
Be wary of contractors that are not local or professional. Unfortunately hail storms and wind storms bring in the fly-by-night construction workers. Please do your homework. Look for roofing contractors that are members of the local Home Builders Association, National Roofing Contractors Association, or Chamber of Commerce. Ask your family and co-workers for referrals.
